Established
in 2002 with an original Australianised adaptation
of Stephen Schwartz's Working, Magnormos is a
dynamic producer of musical theatre with a unique
focus on the work of Australian writers.
Magnormos has received both critical
acclaim and industry commendations for filling a
void in Australian musical theatre development.
Magnormos consistently produces innovative,
provocative works by both new and established
Australian writers, but also presents interesting,
lesser known international works to Australian
audiences.
Premiere productions include include
Stephen Sondheim's Saturday Night (Australian
premiere), Kander & Ebb's Flora the Red Menace
(Australian premiere), Mel Brook's Archy &
Mehitabel (Australian premiere), Anthony
Costanzo's Life's A Circus (World premiere),
David Young's The Beauty Spot (World
premiere), DiPietro and Robert's The Thing
About Men (Australian premiere), and two succesful seasons of Bowen and Bell's [title of show].
In 2010 Magnormos produced the Australian contingent of the international celebrations for Stephen Sondheim's birthday, with a triptych of his works (Saturday Night, Merrily We Roll Along, and Anyone Can Whistle) performed in concert at Melbourne Recital Centre.
Magnormos
has provided workshop and development assistance to
new work including Better Than Broadway
(David Mitchell, Melvyn Morrow and Ray Cook), and
Flowerchildren (Peter Fitzpatrick), and in 2004
sent Joe Starts Again to be the first
Australian musical to participate in the New York
Music Theatre Festival.
Magnormos has presented the annual OzMade
Musicals showcase since 2003. OzMade Musicals is a developmental and promotional
platform for Australian-written musical theatre.
Magnormos also operates the Musical Theatre Readings Program, the Prompt!
Musicals program, and regular Musical Theatre Trivia
Nights.
