Lucy Birkinshaw is a professional lighting designer recently relocated from Perth to Melbourne.  Lucy’s distinctive approach to depth, contrast and beauty within her designs make her an identifiable theatre artist.  Lucy has created lighting for dance, theatre, music theatre, live concerts, television and installations.

Lucy trained initially as a Fine Artist, graduating with a Bachelor of Art from Curtin University in 1999. After forging a career in fashion design Lucy decided to move her artistic practice into the field of lighting design and furthered her studies at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, graduating with an Advanced Diploma in Lighting Design for Performance and Production in 2005.

Her work so far has led her to collaborate with companies including Black Swan Theatre Company, Red Ryder Productions, Side Pony Productions and Perth Theatre Company. Lucy has had the pleasure of working with a range of established and up and coming choreographers and directors including Chrissie Parrott, Jon Milson, Tom Gutteridge, Reyes De Lara, Sue Peacock, Justin Rutzou, Emily McLean, Margaret Cameron, Crispin Taylor, Aimee Smith, Matt Lutton, Adam Mitchell, Vivienne Glance and Zoe Pepper.

Lucy also has a strong technical background including the role of Head Electrician and Senior Board Operator at His Majesty’s Theatre, Perth within her first year of graduation. Lucy was also the Graduate Lighting Assistant for WAAPA for her year.
