CASTING BRIEF
ABOUT THE SHOW:
FLOWERCHILDREN is an exciting new Australian musical about the turbulent private lives of the American vocal group The Mamas and The Papas between their spectacular rise to fame in 1966 and their tragic demise only four years later, in 1970. The musical explores the distrust, dangerous passions, and unhealthy co-dependencies behind this group who left a legacy of timeless hits such as Monday Monday, Creeque Alley, Words of Love, and the iconic California Dreamin.
Magnormos assisted the early development of flowerchildren in 2009 with a workshop presentation to invited industry peers, and will now be presenting the world premiere public season at Theatre Works for a strictly limited engagement.
The season will consist of twelve performances, opening on Monday 29 August and closing on Saturday 10 September, following two public previews on August 26 and 27.
Rehearsals will begin on July 25. There will be a mix of daytime and nightime calls and all cast should make themselves fully available for rehearsal as required in the production week beginning August 22.
FLOWERCHILDREN will be a professional production based on profit-share; each of the four Hullabaloos will have a guarantee of $500 on top of the profit-share allocation.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWNS:
The Four Hullaballoos: General Note:
The Mamas and Papas frequently double-tracked each of the four singers to create either the impression of an eight-part sound, or – occasionally – a genuine eight-part harmony. In flowerchildren many of the fourteen songs in the show will be performed live by the eight voices to simulate the distinctive richness of that sound. Each of the four will also play a cameo role in Act Two, as outlined below.
JILL GIBSON (HULLABALOO/BACKING VOCALIST/ENSEMBLE)
Supporting - Female [18-25]
Jill Gibson, Lou Adler's girlfriend, replaces Michelle Phillips temporarily in the band as it tours Canada. High spirited, confident and pushy. Hullabaloo 1 is a dancer on the Hullabaloo television show, and the visual cover and vocal counterpart for Mama Michelle.
LINDA (HULLABALOO/BACKING VOCALIST/ENSEMBLE)
Supporting - Female [18-30]
Linda has a relationship with Denny. A large, sweet girl. Hullabaloo 2 is a dancer on the Hullabaloo television show, and the visual cover and vocal counterpart for Mama Cass throughout the show.
GENE CLARK (HULLABALOO/BACKING VOCALIST/ENSEMBLE)
Supporting - Male [18-25]
Gene Clark is lead vocalist and tambourine player for The Byrds. Romantically linked to Michelle Phillips. Cool and good looking. Hullaballoo 3 is a dancer on the Hullabaloo television show, and the visual cover and vocal counterpart for Papa Denny.
LOU ADLER (HULLABALOO/BACKING VOCALIST/ENSEMBLE)
Supporting - Male [25-40]
Lou Adler is the producer of The Mamas & the Papas. Fast talking, businesslike, and just a little crass. Hullabaloo 4 is a dancer on the Hullabaloo television show, and the visual cover and vocal counterpart for Papa John.
