PROMPT MUSICALS> ABOUT
The
Magnormos Prompt Musicals Program presents a ‘studio season’ of new, rarely
performed and/or Australian musicals which may otherwise not get the
opportunity to be seen by Victorian (or indeed Australian) audiences.
The presentations are staged with full choreography and blocking, but are
supported by simple and slick design elements – a distinctive and robust
performance style. With a streamlined production design, Prompt Musicals
presentations retain a focus on the ‘performer’ as the catalyst for dramatic
interpretation and the ‘writing’ of the text and music. A prompt script on a
podium as part of the stage aesthetic, as well as low ticket prices, helps
to frame audience expectations of the works as ‘studio’ presentations.
Compact but potent renderings of musicals, Prompt Musicals offers a polished
artistic outcome utilising a meticulous economy of resources.
The Prompt Musicals Program evolved from Magnormos’ earlier Music Theatre
Readings Program, established in 2003 with the Australian premiere of
Stephen Sondheim’s first musical 'Saturday Night'. For
