In
1964, Egyptian archaeologists discovered a unique tomb, in which two men of the
Fifth Dynasty had been buried together in a strikingly intimate fashion.
The men: Niankhhnum and Khnumhotep, and their exact relationship are still
fodder for academic resolution - so much so that their legacy inspired New
Yorkers' Clint Jefferies and Paul L. Johnson to pen Nile Blue, which
had its first performance in April 2003 by Wings Theatre Company, NYC.
A
musical 'what if?', this provocative musical play explores how two men,
forty-four hundred years ago, managed to fashion a life together - a
relationship open enough and respected enough to have earned them such a
splendid send-off into eternity. Written in a modern idiom, with a
fantasy new age score, Nile Blue is not your typical travelogue
through ancient Egypt.
Hot
off the New York stage, the Australian premiere of Nile Blue (as the
second sell-out instalment of the Magnormos Music Theatre Readings Program)
was only the second performance of this text world-wide.
'The story of true love is one that never becomes unexciting, no matter how many times it is told... the heart and soul presented in Nile Blue were sweet and memorable." - Jade Esteban Estrada (Off Off Broadway)
