Mary Bryant

Music by David King
Book and Lyrics by
Nick Enright

The Mary Bryant story begins in the late 1800's, when she is sentenced to seven years deportation to the Botany Bay penal colony. Desperate and hungry, a small band of convicts including Mary escape to sea on the colony's fishing boat, and in one of the greatest sailing voyages in history, travel over 5,000 kilometres to Koepang.

Originally commissioned by WAAPA and performed there as The Voyage of Mary Bryant in 1996, the work was later revised and presented in 1998 NSW by the Ensemble Theatre Company. MARY BRYANT was recently revived by the Magnormos Prompt Musicals program to critical acclaim.
