A town collapses under the pressure of
global conflict. Mothers and daughters, sisters, friends and entire cultures are
torn apart by the secrets that start to fall.
SYNOPSIS Darwin, 1941. We follow the lives of four groups of women as the
town deteriorates under the pressure of imminent invasion. Two best friends are
torn apart by wartime suspicion, a woman's secrets are uncovered by her
daughter, two Indigenous maids negotiate with colonialism, and a young
storekeeper learns that male attention is not always a good thing. Glass,
mirrors, flashes of light - what is real and what is reflection? What is Mr
Takahashi up to, cowered behind his camera? As the town begins to crumble under
the weight of its secrets, one must ask: is Mr Takahashi to blame?
STATUS Book Writer / Lyricist Sandra Thibodeaux was writing a radio play
on Australian WWII stories when the concept for the musical evolved. Teaming up
with Shellie Morris, the project was initiated with ArtsNT funding in 2004.The
intention was to create a work of warmth and (female) beauty to set up a
counter-narrative to traditional, male-oriented, war stories. Earlier this year,
the work was short listed for the Patrick White Playwrights' Award. In
2007, the writers will be actively looking for producers. There are plans for a
film adaptation over the next two years.
