Set in 1993, Paul Medforth seems
destined to become a star of the Australian musical theatre scene. Will he
succumb to the lure of a pop career or stick to his artistic guns?
SYNOPSIS It is 1993, and after Paul Medforth wins the lead role in the
blockbuster musical 'The Count of Monte Cristo', he seems destined to become a
star of the Australian musical theatre scene. But he dreams of something more
substantial, and Australian, while a pop career beckons seductively. Meanwhile
there are rumours of another international show coming to our shores - 'The
Picture of Dorian Gray', and everyone, including Paul, dreams of snaring a role.
At the same time, a shy young girl, Sam Davis, stumbles in her own way towards a
career much less lucrative, much less famous, but ultimately more fulfilling …
THE HAPPY MEDIUM is a hilarious look at the state of original musical theatre in
Australia, both then and now.
DEVELOPMENT HISTORY: THE HAPPY MEDIUM began life in 1996 as an
unfinished novel, and resurfaced earlier this year, when its author realised
that a tale about musicals should really be a musical. OzMade Musicals 2007
marks its first performance in any form anywhere. Peter J Casey's passion for
Australian musicals, good and bad, and his experience in musical theatre have
lead him to write a show for lovers of musicals, on a scale that makes it easy
to tour, with lots of delicious roles for eight performers and a small band. He
plans to undertake a reading and workshop production in 2008.
